Finance, Business, Investment and Banking Terms

  1. derivative : a financial instrument derived from some other asset; rather than trade or exchange the asset itself, market participants enter into an agreement to exchange money, assets or some other value at some future date based on the underlying asset. (derivative market)
  2. futures contract : an agreement to exchange the underlying asset (or equivalent cash flows) at a future date.
  3. speculator : a person who trades (i.e. derivatives, commodities, bonds, equities or currencies) with a higher-than-average risk, in return for a higher-than-average profit potential. Speculators take large risks, especially with respect to anticipating future price movements, or gambling, in the hopes of making quick, large gains.
  4. hedge fund : an investment company that uses high-risk techniques, such as borrowing money and selling short, in an effort to make extraordinary capital gains.
  5. depreciate : to diminish in price or value. (depreciation of yen)
  6. option : right to buy or sell property that is granted in exchange for an agreed upon sum. If the right is not exercised after a specified period, the option expires and the option buyer forfeits the money.
  7. barrier : a fixed value.
  8. premium : extra payment usually made as an incentive.Price a put or call buyer must pay to a put or call seller (writer) for an option contract. The premium is determined by market supply and demand forces.

  1. sabbatical : a leave usually taken every seventh year (go on sabbatical)
  2. brim : be completely full (memory brims with)
  3. dwindle : become smaller or lose substance (dwindling supply of money)
  4. commensurate : corresponding in size or degree or extent (commensurate with your excellence)
  5. reverence : the act of adoring, especially reverently (reverence for the power of human thought)
  6. serendipity : pure luck in discovering things you were not looking for (a moment of serendipity)
  7. defunct : no longer in force or use; inactive; dead (a defunct political organization / a defunct economist)
  8. sublime : inspiring awe (life's most sublime moments)
  9. fallible : likely to fail or be inaccurate; having the attributes of man as opposed to e.g. divine beings; frail; imperfect; weak (fallible analysis and logic)
  10. susceptible : easily influenced or affected (susceptible to abuse)
  11. wryly : disdainfully or ironically humorous; scornful and mocking (commented wryly)
  12. peril : a state of danger involving risk (in a peril)
  13. cede : give over; surrender or relinquish to the physical control of another (cede the hope to changing one's mind)
  14. advent : the coming or arrival, especially of something extremely important (the advent of new truths / the advent of computer)
  15. consensus : agreement of the majority in sentiment or belief (consensus or comity overshadows clarity)

  1. annals : a chronological record of the events of successive years (the short and simple annals of the poor / the annals of sport history)
  2. rife : abundant or numerous (rife with tragic air disasters)
  3. horrendous : hideous; dreadful (the most horrendous lost endured / horrendous explosion shook the whole city)
  4. fodder : a consumable, often inferior item or resource that is in demand and usually abundant supply; feed for livestock, especially coarsely chopped hay or straw; raw material as for artistic creation (romantic novels intended as fodder for the pulp fiction market / a storyline that typically makes for instant movie fodder)
  5. finesse : subtly skillful handling of a situation (directed with suprising finesse)
  6. coax : influence or urge by gentle urging, caressing, or flattering (a job that requires him to coax concessions from the NCAA)
  7. concession : a contract granting the right to operate a subsidiary business (receive consessions from a company)
  8. maelstrom : a violent or turbulent situation (caught in the maelstrom of war / deal with the maelstrom of conflicted emotions besetting students, educators and fans)
  9. savvy : the cognitive condition of someone who understands (might be able to coax with some savvy marketing / savvy Washington insiders / a banker known for financial savvy)
  10. astute : having or showing a clever awareness and resourcefulness in practical matters; having a keen, sharp mind; marked by practical hardheaded intelligence (very astute when it comes to writing comedy sketches)
